What's the difference between 5W-30 engine oil and 10W-30 engine oil?
Whenever I goe to the store, I always see two kinds of engine oil: 5W-30 and 10W-30. There's also 5W-20 and all these other kinds. So what's the difference between all these different engine oils? I always used 5W-30 engine oil, but I might want to switch to 10W-30. So what's so different?
The difference between 5w30 and 10w30 is that 5w30 flows better at colder temperature. If you live in a place where it gets cold often, or during the winter time, you will get better results using 5w30. Otherwise 10w30 oil is good enough, i usually use 5w30 all year round. It works better in the winter, and its ok during the summer too. Some car manufactures say not to use 10w30 and go with only 5w30, or vice versa, so check your car manual for anything like that. It's not really gonna mess anything up if you go with 10w30 when the manufacturer suggests 5w30, but its just better to go along with what is recommend. I find most older cars need 10w30 and the manuals say to not use 5w30 unless absolutely necessary. I think this summer I'll be switching to 10w30 because its going to get up to 110F+ where i live.
